Hello My Ace and Aro Readers,
Ace LA went to LA Pride for the first time and we were thrilled to see so many of you come out to march with us! Here are some pictures of the parade for you to take a look!
Pride is over, welcome to what I like to call disability wrath month. Disability politics being more important as the country tries to return queerness to its former disabled category. In meantime, I’ve got you a newsletter, with a lot in media section for you all to hopefully enjoy.

July 7th-13th is Nonbinary Awareness Week.
July 11th is Two Spirit Awareness Day.
July 14th is International Nonbinary Peoples Day.
July 16th is Drag Day.
As of June 2023, Ace LA will alternate between outdoor in-person (weather permitting) and virtual meetups. We are also keeping an eye out on the air quality due to the wildfires to make sure it is safe to be outside for hours. For in-person meetups and volunteering, you will be asked to mask unless eating or drinking and will be required to sign a waiver stating you understand the risk of exposure, and that you absolve Ace Los Angeles of any liability. Masks are available on request.
Ace LA has social meetings the second Sunday of every month.

Our Ears Are Burning!
This section is where we link you to articles and studies on asexuality and aromantisim.
A look at the growing queer community in Odisha, India and a few brief accounts from queer individuals, as they celebrate pride month.
The Good Men Project calls people in about showing up as allies beyond rainbows and pride month as queer rights are increasingly under attack. While Short, this piece does a good job at laying out the current state of threats to queer rights and challenges people to get actually demonstrate their support.
A blog post reviews methods of queering in respect to asexuality, asking us to read the asexual-spectrum with all its possibilities for queer theory and scholarship.
Canton Winer builds on a previous paper introducing gender detachment, this time offering the concept of compulsory gender, his newest paper explores theories around gender and resistance to gender. Both of these papers are the result of interviews with asexual individuals, which suggests asexuality as an important site for deconstructing gender.
Tell Me a Story...
In this section we will spotlight an asexual or aromantic representation in media and entertainment news.
A list of 10 video games with queer representation for pride month and beyond. A nice offering of a variety of types games for people to play.
A review for new non-dating sim “I Just Want To Be Single” which features an aroace nonbinary protagnist.
A review of 2022 horror film “Something in the Dirt”, which features an asexual main character.
Some commentary on Stefan Moffat’s acephobia, particularly as it relates to his time as show runner for Doctor Who. It also expands on the damage to asexual fans and the larger fandom community.
Reflecting on what can be gained from rethinking the infamous tumblr “show” All or Nothing, a personal essay exploring prude-slut solidarity.
comicsbeat interviews Jeremy Whitley, one of the creators of the upcoming comic anthology Aces and Aros, about their other works, asexuality, and putting it together.
Expanding the Script: Ace Stories, Structures, and Perspectives in Publishing: A transcript of a roundtable with aspec creatives.
Finally, looking at Jughead’s asexual storyline, however brief and erased it was.

In this section we will provide links to articles and resources designed to educate and inform on asexuality and aromanticism.
Queerplatonic was the word of the day on Oprah Daily.
Part 2 of deep dive into what three nonfiction ace books (Decker, Chen, and Brown) (nonfiction) reveals and explores about asexuality and aromanticism.
Originally a Croatian language article, A is at the End of the Alphabet explores the dismissal and discrimination that ace and aro individuals routinely experience.
Essence published a brief piece on asexuality for National Sex Day. Mostly this is just affirming and contains basic information but still very solid.
We Want You!
This section is for informing you of requests for participation of aces and aros by other organizations, including studies, surveys, archive efforts, media projects, interviews, and policy / community feedback.
AZE Journal has open submissions for asexual, aromantic, and agender writers on the topic of resilience toward oppression and social pressures . Submissions can include many different kinds of written or non-written work and are open until July 15th.
A special interest of Humanities a journal “on the meaning of cultural expression and perceptions as seen through different interpretative lenses” is looking for written submissions on single, unmarried, widowed, asexual, queer, or otherwise celibate Irish authors or characters, open until November 3rd.
Marconi University based researcher, along with several others is conducting a study on attitude and opinions on attraction and intimate relationships. and seeking participants.
Teachers College at Columbia University is seeking asexual participants to discuss their experiences interacting with mental health professionals for a research study.
A professor at National University is looking for participants for a study of romantic/sexual relationships when 1 or more of the partners is ace-spec.
Aspec podcast is looking for people interested in being featured as guests.
AUREA (Aromantic-Spectrum Union for Recognition, Education, and Advocacy) is asking for your experiences as part of a book project on aromantisim and intersectionality.
Queer Author Emily Garside is writing a book on queer television and in an effort to include as much as possible is asking for people to fill out a survey on their experiences.
University of Southern Queensland is doing a study on psychedelic drug use among queer people.
Researchers at University of Iowa are looking for 500 people to participate in a study on asexuality and reproductive health.
